CREW Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 27, 2026
CREW is a hangout buddy-map app from Harbor Works Digital (“we”).
This policy explains what we collect, why, and how long we keep it.
It applies to the CREW Android app
(com.harborworksdigital.crew) and the web app at
crew-self.vercel.app.
Information we collect
- Account. CREW uses Firebase anonymous sign-in so you can hang out without an email. If you add a display name, we store it with your hangout membership. If you choose to link a Google account, we store your Google name and email so your profile can persist across devices.
- Hangout data. Team name, membership, invite links, buddy-zone settings (follow the captain or a fixed spot, and range), arrival / live status, in-app alerts, and hangout start/end times.
- Precise location. During a live hangout, after you allow location (and, on Android, after you allow background location if you want sharing to continue with the screen off or in another app), we collect precise GPS so your crew can see you on the live map and stay in the buddy zone. We do not collect a location history trail. Sharing stops when you leave the hangout or the captain ends it.
- Photos. Optional profile photos are stored in Firebase Storage. We do not use the camera for capture in the current app; photos come from your gallery if you choose one.
- Device notifications. If you allow notifications, we may store a push token so hangout alerts (start, SOS, straying) can reach your device.
- Safety reports. If you submit a conduct report, we store the text you write, who you reported, and hangout identifiers so Harbor Works can review it.
How we use it
We use this data to run hangouts: show the live map, buddy zone, who is live or on the way, alerts, and SOS. Optional Google linking is only used to keep your CREW identity. We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your location for advertising.
Sharing
People in your hangout can see your display name, profile photo, live status, and live location while the hangout is active. Captains see assembly and range status for the crew.
Infrastructure is provided by Google Firebase (authentication, database, storage, and optionally Cloud Messaging) and hosting by Vercel. Those providers process data on our behalf to run CREW. We do not share data with advertisers.
Retention
- Live map pins are cleared when a hangout ends. We do not keep a GPS breadcrumb trail of where you walked.
- Hangout membership and settings may remain until the captain ends and the hangout is cleaned up, or until you leave.
- If someone uses SOS, a conduct report, or a straying alert during a hangout, we save a snapshot of the map and roster at that moment so we can review safety issues. Those snapshots are kept for up to 180 days, then deleted. Ordinary hangouts with no SOS, report, or straying alert do not create these archives.
Your choices
- Decline location permission; live map features will not work for you until you allow it.
- On Android, choose “While using the app” instead of “Allow all the time” if you do not want background sharing.
- Skip a profile photo and skip Google linking.
- Leave or end a hangout to stop live tracking.
- Email us to request access or deletion of account or safety-report data we hold.
Children
CREW is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes
We may update this policy when CREW changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change. Continued use of CREW after an update means you accept the revised policy.
